Čachtice Castle was constructed in the middle of the 13th century to guard the western border of Hungary. The castle was destroyed by fire in the early 1700s.
Čachtice is best known for its blood-thirsty mass-murderer, Countess Erzsébet Báthory. She believed that her beauty could be preserved by bathing in the blood of virgins. It is estimated that about 650 girls were sadisticly murdered. Although a regular trial never took place, more than 300 people testified to her guilt. Báthory died in solitary confinement in her own castle.

:One has to be careful when visiting the ruins. They are not handicap-accessible. For example, what’s left of the tower Peter is standing on drops down about 10 meters (11 yards) behind him.
