Smolenice Castle is located about 60 km northwest of Bratislava. The first Smolenice Castle was constructed in the 14th century, but it was destroyed in the 18th century. Construction on the current castle began late in the 19th century by the Pálffy family. Today, the castle is the Congress Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and the facility is used for many international conferences throughout the year.
