The Vršatec ruins are situated on a steep cliff. This kept invaders at bay for hundreds of years, but in the early 1700s, the Hungarians took control of Vršatec castle. The royal army of Imre Thököly destroyed the castle with explosives shortly afterwards to prevent its occupation by insurgents.
