Medzilaborce, as Spectacular Slovakia calls it, truly is “Modern art in a desolate town.” Medzilaborce is out in the back country of north-east Slovakia. But this is the place where Andy Warhol’s parents were from.
Actually, my trip to the Warhol Family Museum of Modern Art was a bit of a fiasco. First, we underestimated how long the trip would take. After a grueling all-day drive, we arrived about 1/2 hour after the museum would have closed (not that the hours are posted on the museum’s website or anything). But the museum was also undergoing unannounced renovation. So it was closed. Fortunately, the janitor was cleaning when we arrived, and he showed us the few pieces of art on the first floor. There were also the Campbell’s Soup Cans and the Andy Warhol Fountain outside the museum.
