Welcome to Slovak Paradise (Slovenský raj) National Park
Hornád River Canyon (Prielom Hornádu)
The first known passage through the Hornád River Canyon (Prielom Hornádu) on its frozen river surface occured in February 1906. In July of the same year, explorers floated down the river on a wooden raft. Hornád River Canyon is one of the most attractive canyons of Slovakia. In 1974, the gradual opening of the canyon to the public was completed from the neck of the Hornád River (Hrdlo Hornádu) to the Rocky Gate (Skalné vráta) near the mouth of the White Brook (Biely potok). You can pass the most extreme site of the Hornád River Canyon only by using the metal steps and chains. In the eastern part of this trail, there is also an educational trail that crosses through the National Nature Reserve with the same name—Prielom Hornádu. There the fifth (strictest) level of protection is in effect for the natural environment. In order to protect this fragile and beautiful area, hiking is allowed only inside the marked trail.
